If your WARDOGS Closed Alpha invite has not turned up, check your Steam library before you check your email. Access is granted to the Steam account linked to your FirstLook profile and appears as a playtest entry in your library. It does not arrive as a message in your inbox.
That single mismatch explains a large share of the "where is my invite" posts this week, and it is made worse by official posts telling people to watch their email.
First, is it actually broken?
Two things account for most of the panic, and neither is a fault.
The servers open later than the client does. The login window is reported as 17:00 UTC on Friday 7 August through to 02:00 UTC on Monday 10 August. The game itself became installable and launchable well before that. If you are launching in the morning and nothing works, the servers are simply not up yet — that is 13:00 US Eastern, 10:00 US Pacific, 18:00 in the UK.
Invites went out in waves. Not everyone was invited at the same moment, so a quiet Friday morning does not mean a rejection. Bulkhead has said it is distributing tens of thousands of invites.
Before you troubleshoot anything on your own machine, rule out the obvious: whether WARDOGS is down for everyone right now is a two-second check, and the live Steam concurrent count tells you whether anybody is getting through at all. A flat count next to a wave of reports is a capacity problem, not your install.
Those login times are Reported, sourced to outlets citing official @WARDOGS posts. Bulkhead has not mirrored them to Steam, which is a recurring theme on this page.
Where your invite actually lands
| What you might expect | What is reported to happen |
|---|---|
| An email with a key | A playtest grant on your linked Steam account |
| A code to redeem | An entry appearing in your Steam library |
| A dashboard confirmation | The FirstLook dashboard may still read "waitlist" |
If Steam and FirstLook were never linked, there is nowhere for the grant to go. That is the first thing to check, and it is the one failure with a clear cause.
Several players report the FirstLook dashboard showing "waitlist" while the Steam grant is live. Bulkhead has not explained that discrepancy. The Steam library is what determines whether you can install and play — trust it over the dashboard.
ACCESS DENIED
This has since been answered. The beta produced the numbered version of this screen, and it has a fix that works: see 1147405308 for the current steps. What follows is the alpha-weekend record, written on 7 August, when nobody had one.
This is the most-reported error of the week and there is no published fix.
We want to be straight about that, because several sites will tell you otherwise. Bulkhead has posted nothing about it to the Steam news hub, and the pinned developer FAQ in the Steam discussions does not mention it. A community thread titled "Access Denied error (Solved)" exists and has drawn real engagement, but the fix in it is player-sourced, not official, and we are not going to launder it into instructions with our name on them.
What is reasonable to check, in order:
- The clock. Is the login window actually open? Before 17:00 UTC Friday, denial is expected.
- The account. Is the Steam account you are launching from the one linked to FirstLook? A second Steam account is a common cause of a mismatch.
- The library entry. Does the playtest appear in your Steam library at all? If not, this is an invite problem rather than an access error.
- The Discord announcements channel. If servers are down or invites are still rolling, that is where it will be said first.
If none of that resolves it, the honest answer today is that nobody outside Bulkhead knows. We will update this page when there is an official cause rather than when there is a plausible-sounding one.
Crashes on launch
Also unexplained officially. Players report the game crashing on launch during the alpha weekend, including at least one case where deleting the Easy Anti-Cheat folder and verifying Steam files did not help.
The relevant context: WARDOGS uses kernel-level Easy Anti-Cheat, which the Steam store page confirms. Kernel-level anti-cheat is a well-known source of launch failures, and it interacts with security software, virtualisation settings and driver state in ways that ordinary games do not. That makes it a plausible area to look at. It does not make it a diagnosis, and we are not presenting it as one.
This is an alpha whose stated purpose is stability and back-end testing at scale. Crashes are the thing being tested. If you hit one, the most useful action is reporting it through the official channels rather than hunting a fix.
Is it too late to get in?
Not necessarily, but the odds have narrowed.
The hardware-survey deadline for the first round of invites was 16 July 2026 and has passed — a detail most coverage leaves out. Signing up now puts you in line for a later wave, if there is one. Bulkhead has said open beta tests for all Steam players are planned "in the future" with no timing attached.
The route in has not changed: create a FirstLook account, join the official Discord, link both Steam and Discord to FirstLook, and complete the hardware survey. The full step-by-step is on our alpha page.
What nobody has answered
Worth stating plainly, because these are the questions being asked repeatedly with no reply:
- What causes ACCESS DENIED, and what resolves it
- Why the FirstLook dashboard and the Steam grant disagree
- What causes the launch crashes
- Whether any further invite waves are going out this weekend
If Bulkhead publishes on any of these, this page gets updated the same day.
