Getting in

How to play WARDOGS

Published Updated Data as of Season 1 · 10 Sept 2026

You buy it. WARDOGS is on sale in Steam Early Access at $39.99, and there is no beta, invite, key or sign-up between you and the game any more. The two Closed Betas that gated it in August and September are over, and everything below about how they worked is here for the record.

If you own it and cannot get in, that is a different question with a different page: the live outage tracker says whether the servers are up, and the error hub has the fix for each code.

Status

WARDOGS is out now

Steam Early Access opened on 10 September 2026 at $39.99 — no invite, key or beta needed. If you own it and cannot get in, the live status page says whether that is you or the servers.

When Closed Beta 02 ran

Confirmed

19:00 UTC on Thursday 3 September 2026 to 08:00 UTC on Sunday the 6th — one continuous window of 61 hours. Bulkhead published both ends on a schedule card on the morning of the 3rd, replacing the earlier announcement, which gave only a day and "right after The FPS Games Show". The show itself still runs at 18:00 UTC, an hour before the servers come up.

  • 19:00 UTC — servers up, Thursday 3 September
  • 20:00 BST — UK
  • 21:00 CEST — Central Europe
  • 15:00 ET — US Eastern
  • 12:00 PT — US Pacific

The card also carries NDA lifted: the build is free to capture and stream, the same as the first beta. Four days separate the servers shutting on Sunday morning and Early Access on 10 September.

The last night was open. At 21:08 UTC on Saturday 5 September Bulkhead posted "THE CLOSED BETA IS NOW AN OPEN BETA!" on Steam — "Come break our servers" — and the final eleven hours to the Sunday close ran with the doors open. That is the only open beta there has been, and it reversed the "waves, not an open beta" line from the 1 September announcement. The post, and what it changed →

The show is worth the calendar entry on its own. Bulkhead gave the beta away two days early specifically so it would not have to hold it, and says it still has "a HUGE announcement that no one will see coming" for the broadcast — a week before launch. What was announced, in full →

What Beta 02 is testing

Confirmed

Bulkhead called this "a genuine scale test" and named the systems it wants broken — the "areas of the game that only break at scale":

  • Server scaling and browsing — the 100-player servers, and finding one.
  • The login queue — the thing that decides whether launch day is a launch or a wait.
  • Twitch Drops — the integration that was hurting server stability in August and pushed the first beta's start back half an hour.
  • DLC entitlements — whether the Supporter Edition's contents actually grant themselves.
  • VOIP — in-game voice, under load.

None of that is a map or a gun, and that is the point. This is the plumbing under a launch, being run in public a week before the launch.

What time does WARDOGS unlock?

Reported

16:00 UTC on Thursday 10 September 2026, which is 17:00 in the UK and 12:00 US Eastern. That is Steam's own scheduled unlock for the app rather than something Bulkhead has announced — the studio has published the date and never the hour, and the store page still shows a date with no clock on it.

  • 16:00 UTC — 10 September
  • 17:00 BST — UK
  • 18:00 CEST — Central Europe
  • 12:00 ET — US Eastern
  • 09:00 PT — US Pacific
  • 21:30 IST — India
  • 02:00 AEST — Australia East, 11 September

Treat it as a schedule rather than a promise. A store unlock is a field Valve can move, and it has not been restated by anyone at Bulkhead or Team17, so it is Reported here rather than Confirmed. We re-read it on 26 August and will re-read it on the day. For what it is worth, both the Closed Alpha and the Closed Beta opened at 17:00 UTC, an hour later than this.

For the test that has already been and gone: the first Closed Beta opened at 17:00 UTC on Friday 21 August 2026 and ended at 02:00 UTC on Monday 24 August — 03:00 BST, 22:00 US Eastern on the Sunday. Its servers have been down since, and Beta 02 on 3 September is what brings them back.

What to see while you wait

Is it worth buying at $39.99?

Pre-ordering is over; WARDOGS is simply on sale. What still matters about the price is its direction. Bulkhead has promised the price rises during Early Access, so early is the cheapest WARDOGS will be.

The refund line is worth taking at face value, and it is the reason the guaranteed route is a lower-risk bet than it looks. Steam's standard policy gives you two hours of playtime and fourteen days, a beta played from the 3rd sits comfortably inside both, and Bulkhead pointed at the policy unprompted when it sold the first one. Beta at a glance

Closed Beta 02Confirmed

3–6 September 2026, 19:00 UTC Thursday to 08:00 UTC Sunday

Servers run from 19:00 UTC on Thursday 3 September to 08:00 UTC on Sunday 6 September — one continuous window, published as a schedule card on @WARDOGS on the morning of the 3rd under "Slightly updated server times for the Closed Beta". It supersedes the 1 September announcement, which gave only a day and "right after The FPS Games Show"; the show itself runs at 18:00 UTC, an hour before the servers now open. Both times were published as an image rather than as text. That leaves four days between the beta closing and Early Access on 10 September.

Guaranteed by pre-ordering, otherwise invited in waves

"Pre-Order now to guarantee access - with limited access being handed out in waves." Bulkhead ruled out an open beta in the same post: it is raising the Steam Playtest invite count in steps rather than opening the doors, so it can watch each step hold. That held for two days and two hours; see beta02Open.

When the first beta ran

Confirmed

17:00 UTC on Friday 21 August to 02:00 UTC on Monday 24 August — one continuous window, not three sessions, so players logged in whenever suited them rather than queueing for a slot. Bulkhead published the window on the Steam news hub on 20 August, having given only dates until then.

The store page sold the beta as "August 21th – 23rd", but the window closed two hours into Monday — the same shape the alpha ran. Worth remembering now, because Beta 02 has been announced with a start day and no times at all.

Two pages from that weekend stay useful into launch: our live outage tracker, which is how you tell a server-side problem from one that is only happening to you, and the Steam concurrent count, the fastest way to see how launch day is actually going.

This is not the FirstLook system

The Closed Alpha on 7–9 August was gated by Bulkhead's FirstLook programme: a community account, a linked Steam and Discord, a hardware survey, invite waves. The Closed Beta ran through Steam directly, and none of that applies to it. Guides that told you to complete a hardware survey to get into the August beta were describing the previous test.

FirstLook is still worth having for whatever playtests Bulkhead runs after launch — Bulkhead sent tens of thousands of alpha invites through it and kept distributing them right up to the window opening. The route is unchanged: sign up at community.wardogs.com, join the official Discord, link both to FirstLook, and complete the hardware survey. How FirstLook access works →

Could you stream the beta?

Confirmed

Yes — the NDA was lifted before the servers opened. Bulkhead said so in the same 20 August post that gave the window: players were free to capture and stream, and invited to tag @WARDOGS in clips. That was the opposite of how the alpha started — that one ran under an embargo, record yes and publish no, until 11 August — and it means beta footage published this weekend is legitimate, not leaked. The alpha rules are history rather than a cautious default. Closed Beta 02 carries the same line: the schedule card published on the morning of the 3rd reads "NDA lifted — free to capture and stream", so nothing has tightened between the two tests.

What happens now

Early Access on 10 September 2026, at $39.99, with a price that steps up through the 12–24 months Bulkhead has said it will spend there. Progress from the beta almost certainly does not carry into it — the pinned developer FAQ says the same about the pre-alpha tests and nothing has been said to the contrary. What the beta build contained was a snapshot of a game three weeks from launch: the weapons and vehicles we recorded from the alpha vendor are the closest public list, and balance is the thing Bulkhead has said Early Access is for changing.

One thing worth knowing before the 10th. A launch-day patch lands the moment Early Access opens, and starting the game from a shortcut before Steam has finished pulling it produces 1147405308 — the access-denied screen that is really a version mismatch, and the error we expect to be the morning's most common. It clears in two minutes. If instead you get failed to authenticate with online services with no code attached, that one is the login queue and there is nothing on your machine to do about it.
