Scope zoom not working

WARDOGS scope zoom stopped working: the mouse wheel switches weapons instead

Published Data as of Season 1 · 10 Sept 2026

This one is on your machine

Scope zoom has no entry in the controls menu, so binding anything else to the mouse wheel (weapon switching, zeroing) overwrites it, and resetting keybinds in game does not restore it. Close the game and delete the two ScopeZoom entries from GameUserSettings.ini, or delete the whole file. Team17 has acknowledged the bug; Update 0.1.2 did not fix it.

What you see

Scrolling while aiming no longer changes magnification on a scope, the monocular, binoculars or the rangefinder. The wheel switches weapons or changes zeroing instead, and Reset to Default in the controls menu does not bring zoom back.

Fixes, in the order worth trying

Work top to bottom and stop when the game launches. Each step is labelled with how much evidence sits behind it, so you can skip the guesses if the first ones work.

  1. 01 Close WARDOGS completely

    Confirmed

The config is written out on exit, so any edit made while the game is running is overwritten when you close it.

  2. 02 Open GameUserSettings.ini

    Confirmed

Press Win+R, enter %LOCALAPPDATA%\Wardogs\Saved\Config\WindowsClient and press OK, then open GameUserSettings.ini in Notepad. Your custom keybinds are one long line near the bottom, under [/script/bhenhancedinput.bhenhancedinputplayerbinds], starting CustomKeybindings=.

  3. 03 Delete the two ScopeZoom entries

    Reported

Find ((TagName="Input.NamedActions.Player.ScopeZoom.Increase"), (PrimaryKey=(bIsCustom=True))) and the matching ScopeZoom.Decrease entry. Delete both, each from its opening (( to its closing )), and the comma after each, so the entries either side stay separated by one comma. Afterwards the word ScopeZoom should not appear anywhere in the file. Save and start the game. This keeps every other bind and setting you have.

  4. 04 Or delete the file and start clean

    Reported

Deleting GameUserSettings.ini (or moving it somewhere else) fixes it too, but resets all your settings and keybinds, graphics and audio included. Several players on the Steam threads confirmed it works.

  5. 05 Afterwards, keep the mouse wheel free

    Reported

There is no separate zoom binding and no modifier option yet, so binding weapon switching or zeroing to the wheel again will break zoom again. Put those on keys.

Scope zoom in WARDOGS is on the mouse wheel while you aim, and it is the one control you cannot see. There is no Zoom In or Zoom Out entry in the controls menu, which is why so many players break it without realising. Bind Next Weapon, Previous Weapon or zeroing to the wheel and the hidden zoom binding is overwritten. The monocular, the rangefinder, binoculars and every variable scope stop changing magnification.

The part that catches everyone: Reset to Default does not fix it. The broken entries stay in the config file, which is why the fix above edits the file directly. Credit to the Steam player triple, who worked out the two entries in early September, and Daedrac, who found the delete-the-metadata route.

Is it being fixed?

Team17 support acknowledged it on the Report a Problem board on 13 September, saying it had "received similar reports from other players" and escalated it, and repeated that on 27 September. Update 0.1.2 on 30 September does not mention it. What players are asking for is a proper zoom binding, or a modifier so that scroll zooms and Alt+scroll zeroes. Neither exists yet.

Related keybind bugs

This is one of three bugs caused by the same config line. If you rebound reload and now mortars and emplaced weapons will not reload, that is can't reload built weapons, fixed in the same file. If keybinds simply refuse to save, see key bindings not saving. The rangefinder zoom matters for more than comfort: it is how the Recon role ranges targets, which the Recon levelling guide covers.
