WARDOGS network warning icons on your HUD: what each one means

Published Data as of Season 1 · 10 Sept 2026

This one is not your machine

They are network warnings, not errors: the game is telling you it has detected a connection problem, and each icon names which kind. Only the server-rack icon says where the fault is — on the server, so nothing on your PC will clear it. For the other five, the icon tells you what went wrong but not whose end it happened on.

What you see

Small warning symbols appear near the top of the screen by the compass during a match: a server rack with a warning triangle, signal bars with a triangle or an X, a broken chain link, a gauge. They often show up in heavy fighting, and shots seem to land late or the game hangs for a split second.

What to do instead

The cause is not on your machine, so reinstalling and verifying will not reach it. These are the things that actually help while it lasts.

  1. 01 Match the icon to the six in Bulkhead's legend

    Confirmed

WARDOGS Updates posted the key on X on 22 September: "These icons on your HUD indicate that a network performance issue has been detected." The six are Server Performance (a server rack with a warning triangle), High Ping (signal bars with a warning triangle), Ping Instability (signal bars with an X), Packet Loss (a stack of sheets), Connection Stalled (a broken chain link) and Saturated Bandwidth (a gauge). The post gives the names only, with no further explanation, so the table on this page is our reading of what each name means.

  2. 02 If it is the server rack, change server rather than your settings

    Reported

Server Performance is the one icon that names a location, and the location is the server. Players on the Steam thread "Fix Servers" describe exactly this: a 42 ms ping on the server list, the server-rack icon in the match, and bullets taking "a FAT second to register". Restarting your router will not touch it. Leaving for a different server, ideally a less full one, is the only lever you have.

  3. 03 If it is High Ping, pick a server in your own region

    Reported

The server browser shows ping before you join. Region is the biggest single factor, and it is the most common complaint on the subreddit right now: r/WarDogs opened a region-lock and ping-cap megathread on 24 September because of how many posts it was getting. Players there are asking for a region lock and a ping cap, which is a fair sign that neither exists yet, so for now a low-ping server is something you have to pick yourself.

  4. 04 If it is Packet Loss, Ping Instability or Saturated Bandwidth, test your own line once

    Unconfirmed

These three can start anywhere between your PC and the server. The quick test on your side: play a match on a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi, with downloads and streams on other devices paused. If the icons stop, the problem was at your end. If they carry on, the icons are probably reporting something further along the route or on the server, and there is nothing more to change at home. This is general networking advice rather than anything Bulkhead has published for WARDOGS.

  5. 05 Treat Connection Stalled as a warning that you may be dropped

    Unconfirmed

A stalled connection means data has stopped arriving for a moment. If it clears, you carry on. If it does not, the likely next step is being dropped from the match, which has its own page.

Did this fix it for you?

Notes from other players who hit this code. Say what worked, what did not, and which region you are in — a fix that only works in one place is worth knowing about. Best-rated first, and there is no time limit: an answer from the first beta is still an answer.

No comments yet. Be the first to say whether this worked.

These icons are the game reporting on your connection, not errors in themselves. Nothing has crashed, and nothing on your PC is broken because one has appeared. What matters is which icon it is, because only one of the six says where the problem is.

What does each WARDOGS network icon mean?

Icon Bulkhead's name What it points to Whose end
Server rack with a warning triangle Server Performance The server is struggling to keep up The server's
Signal bars with a warning triangle High Ping Your round trip to the server is long Usually distance, so pick a closer server
Signal bars with an X Ping Instability Your ping is jumping around rather than staying steady Could be either
A stack of sheets Packet Loss Some of the data between you and the server is going missing Could be either
A broken chain link Connection Stalled Data has stopped arriving for a moment Could be either
A gauge Saturated Bandwidth The connection is carrying more than it has room for Could be either

The names come straight from Bulkhead's legend on X, which also circulated in the official Discord. The middle and right-hand columns are our explanation of those names. Bulkhead has not published what triggers each icon, or at what threshold.

Why do they show up during big fights?

Players on the Steam thread "Yellow indicators near compass" noticed they appear most when fighting is heaviest: mortars landing, lots of gunfire, flying. One player said "the game hangs for a split second" when they appear while flying. That fits the server-rack icon: a server with up to a hundred players and a lot happening has the most work to do at exactly those moments.

Is it my connection or the server?

If the icon is the server rack, it is the server. For anything else, the quickest way to tell is the wired-connection test in the steps above. The Steam thread "Fix Servers" is the clearest sign that it is often not your connection. Its players report low ping in the menus, then packet loss and rubberbanding once the match starts, and the player who started it saw the server-rack icon on a 42 ms connection. Bulkhead has not explained what triggers the server icon, or said what it is doing about server performance beyond the icons themselves.

If the connection gives out completely, you are on a different page: kicked from a match covers being dropped partway through, and the server status page shows whether it is happening to everyone.

If that did not do it
