Can you change your name in WARDOGS?

Published Data as of Season 1 · 10 Sept 2026

Not inside the game, as far as players can tell. WARDOGS shows your Steam profile name, and there is no separate in-game name to edit, so the way to change it is to change your Steam name. Names using decorative Unicode fonts show up blank in game. Bulkhead has not published anything on name changes, cooldowns or a rename option.

Not inside the game, as far as anyone has found. WARDOGS shows your Steam profile name, and there is no separate in-game name to set. Players asking on Steam since launch week have been given the same answer by other players: change the name on your Steam profile. Nobody from Bulkhead or Team17 has answered the question, so this is how it behaves rather than an official rule.

Why your name shows up blank

If your Steam name uses a decorative font, the kind made from Unicode letter-like symbols, WARDOGS cannot draw those characters and shows a blank space instead. The fix is plain letters in your Steam name. There is no in-game override.

A name field you cannot edit

At least one player has seen a name field in the game's menus that is greyed out and will not take input, after changing their Steam name. That fits the game taking the name from Steam rather than letting you type one. Nobody has posted how quickly a Steam name change reaches the game, so if the old name sticks, restart the game and Steam before assuming something is wrong.

Hiding your name instead

The settings include a Streamer mode and an Anonymous mode, which since Update 0.1.2 also hides the server name on the loading screen. Players disagree on exactly whose names streamer mode hides, so check it in a match before relying on it on stream.

Names are not unique, either. Because the game takes whatever your Steam profile says, players on Reddit have pointed out that anyone can switch their Steam name to match yours, so a name in the kill feed is not proof of who someone is. Report by what you saw, not just by name.

Whatever you pick, keep it clean. Bulkhead's enforcement policy lists "abusive usernames or clan tags" as bannable. What gets you banned →
