Best flight stick for WARDOGS helicopters

It works, it switches over the moment you climb in, and you will remap it every single session.

A gloved hand closed around the grip of a flight stick standing on a cluttered workbench, its cable loose beside the base, a monitor glowing at the edge of frame.

The flight stick to buy for WARDOGS is the VKB Gladiator NXT EVO, at $139. That is less our verdict than the thread's: when Gamers Heroes co-founder Blaine Smith asked X for a budget setup on 14 August, nearly every reply named the same stick, and several of the people answering had already flown WARDOGS helicopters with one.

A flight stick works, and it works properly. Pitch, roll, yaw on pedals and a throttle converted to collective all bind, and the game swaps to the stick by itself the moment you climb into a helicopter. What it will not do is remember any of it: you remap the whole set every session. That bug, and the price, are the two things worth knowing before Friday.

Which flight stick should you buy for WARDOGS? Five, ranked, from $80 to $600

The Logitech X56 is the cheap way to get a throttle as well. It is a HOTAS rather than a bare stick, which is the industry's way of saying you get a throttle unit as a second box for your other hand, and that second box is what a helicopter wants for its collective. Amazon lists it new at $249.99. Estebeezy's advice in the thread is still the cheaper route if you are patient: "if you can find a x56 Hotas used on marketplace. Can't go wrong with that. Usually people have that with some rudder pedals as well."

The T.16000M FCS is the floor, and it has been flown in WARDOGS. At $79.99 it is the stick you buy to find out whether you like flying with one, and farskebear on r/WarDogs took the HOTAS version into the playtest alongside VKB pedals: "I played the playtest with the Thrustmaster TM16000 HOTAS as well as the VKB pedals and all of it worked flawlessly." Thrustmaster's own store had it out of stock on 19 August.

The Gladiator NXT EVO is the answer for almost everybody. It sits at the point where the sensors stop being the reason you are missing. Airwingmarine put the case for it plainly in the thread: "Cheaper sticks exist, but you'll quickly notice the issues with sensors and quality and regret not spending a little more." Stock moves fast and both right-hand Space Combat Edition grips were showing sold out when we checked on 19 August, so buying one is partly a matter of timing.

The Ursa Minor Fighter is the same argument for less money, which is exactly how Andrii_Sculptor framed it: "you can get practically the exact same stick with the WINWING Ursa Minor Fighter for a bit less." It has Hall sensors on all three axes, meaning the stick reads its own position magnetically with nothing rubbing against anything, which is what stops a cheap stick drifting after a year. It also has a throttle slider on the base, so it is a one-handed setup out of the box. Buy it from WINCTRL rather than from us: it is $113.30 on the manufacturer's own store against $144.70 on Amazon, so the affiliate link is the one that costs you $31.

Does WARDOGS support a flight stick? Yes, and it switches over when you climb in

Yes. Not "probably", and not "a stick is detected as a generic controller". Separate axes bind separately, which is the part that matters for a helicopter.

The clearest account is from InternsDontGetGlocks on r/WarDogs, who mapped a three-piece setup during the playtest: "Thrustmaster AVA stick to pitch/roll, Saitek Pro Flight Combat Rudder Pedals to yaw, Saitek X52 throttle converted to collective, to collective axis." Collective on its own axis is the test a helicopter sim has to pass, and it passes. Their verdict on the process: "It was very easy and quick to map."

The r/WarDogs moderator team has since pinned a HOTAS megathread to stop the question being asked twenty more times. It answers two things outright: HOTAS is supported, and the game switches to it automatically when you enter a helicopter, then back to mouse and keyboard when you get out. You do not toggle anything.

Head tracking works alongside it. The same post pairs vehicle freelook set to always-on with TrackIR, which lets a pilot look through the chin bubble on approach, and the megathread has pilots running Beam Eye Tracker at $30 with an ordinary webcam, or OpenTrack for free, instead of TrackIR's hardware.

A flight stick on a desk beside its coiled USB cable, the port beside it empty.
It works. It is simply written down nowhere official, which is a documentation gap and not a technical one.

What is missing is the paperwork. The WARDOGS Steam page still carries no controller category and no mention of any input device, and three Steam threads asking about joystick support have gone unanswered since April:

Thread Date Replies Answered by Bulkhead
Real joystick control please! 7 April 2026 1 No
hotas support ie joystick and throttle 9 April 2026 3 No
Joystick usage 17 August 2026 11 No

The cost of that silence is real and it lands on buyers. Szymuraj, who opened the August thread, was still unsure the day before the beta: "Will I be able to use it in coming beta 21-23 Aug? I have some doubts due to no mapping data so far for hotas." The answer was yes, and he had to go to Reddit to find it.

What still goes wrong with a HOTAS in WARDOGS? You remap it every session

The bugs are worth reading before you buy, because they are the clearest proof the support is real. Nobody complains about axis behaviour in a game that ignores the device.

You remap everything, every session. This is the one every pilot hits. InternsDontGetGlocks again: "There is an issue where you have to remap them each time right now, which I'm sure they'll fix but it's really so quick to remap that I don't care too much." Budget five minutes at the start of each play session and it is an irritation rather than a dealbreaker.

Remapping can leave an axis stuck. advent89, on a Virpil setup: "it bugged and thought i was constantly yawing each time i remapped so I've just been sticking to ground combat for now." One player, one brand, so treat it as a report rather than a pattern.

Self-centring sticks fight the game. jannikn: "my hotas recenters itself to the middle when I physically release it and then it doesn't center in the game, so I have to correct by going to the opposite side." This is the single most useful thing on this page for anyone shopping, and it points at a specific purchase. patricia_thestripper, asked what suits WARDOGS: "I've heard, specifically for Wardogs, the VKB NXT EVO Omni throttle is great with center return as opposed to a traditional throttle with no center return."

Keyboard as a throttle is not there yet. KnightNii wanted to fly stick-plus-keyboard rather than buy a throttle, and reports the studio is aware: "I did see in discord they are aware of the virtual controller problem and are working on it." We have not seen that statement first-hand, so it sits here as one player's account of a Discord exchange.

What did the people who actually flew WARDOGS with a stick use?

They used the Gladiator, and they were specific about it. MurkedChicken, who had not touched a flight stick since IL-2 Sturmovik in 2001: "I chose to get the VKB Gladiator NXT EVO Space Combat Edition and it feels great in WARDOGS. The flight models for the helicopters are very nicely done." He liked it enough during the playtests to go back and buy a STECS Mk2 Mini throttle to go with it.

Cerberus, on the same thread, called it "the best budget stick that you wont regret spending the 150 dollars on." Wing Zero managed it in seven words: "Pick up a VKB Gladiator thank me later." UrbanFOX just wrote "VKB all the way!"

Reddit's pilots run heavier kit and say the same thing about setup. ReaperUno8675309: "Im using Virpil stick and collective with thrustmaster pedals. Im actually amazed how easy it was to map everything." patricia_thestripper flies a Winctrl Orion 2 stick with a VKB STECS throttle and VKB anti-torque pedals. Both are three-piece setups with the collective split out, which is the configuration a helicopter actually wants.

Two people independently report the same thing about official footage. Edy Nelson on Steam: "in the couple videos we've seen the devs release, some of them were using flight sticks to fly the choppers etc." virg97 on Reddit: "Ive seen some clips of the devs, they were using a joystick to fly the heli." Neither names the video and we have not identified it, so it stays a corroborated community reading of footage rather than a statement from Bulkhead.

Blaine Smith's own conclusion, three replies in: "The VKB has been suggested in nearly every post, so ill likely pick one up."

Is the new Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog MKII worth $599.99 for WARDOGS?

For WARDOGS alone, no. For DCS with WARDOGS on top, that is a different sum.

Thrustmaster announced the MKII on 19 August with pre-orders open and shipping in September 2026, at $599.99 / £449.99 / €549.99. The redesign is real: a rebuilt base for smoother movement and durability, a 1:1 replica of the USAF VIPER grip with 19 action buttons, a two-stage trigger, an 8-way hat switch and Thrustmaster's Hall effect sensors, which the company dates to 15 years of work. Darth_Cheezus flagged why that matters in the Smith thread: "Thrustmaster did update the new sticks to finally have Z-Axis Hall Effect, which is always what failed." The twist axis was the part that wore out.

Read the compatibility line in the announcement carefully. Plug and play in DCS and X-Plane 11 and 12, automatically recognised in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. Four simulators, no shooters. That is not a slight against WARDOGS, it is what a HOTAS is built for, and it means the $599.99 buys you nothing WARDOGS-specific over a $139 Gladiator.

The maths is four Gladiators to one Warthog, for a game that has not confirmed either will work.

Do you need a flight stick at all? What WARDOGS helicopters cost you

Mouse and keyboard flies these helicopters, and one setup shared in the thread by Rambosey gets you most of the way in a minute: "Change the pilot controls to mouse. Lift and take off W and S. Rotate left A, right S. You now have BF6 controls." Manne's read on whether a stick is needed is worth weighing too: "WARDOG is the more Arcade friendly FPS game when it comes to well everything. I whode say Flight stick is overkill but for fun factor for sure great."

Soldiers sitting along the open side bench of a transport helicopter, boots hanging over the edge, flying above a burning industrial landscape.
Every airframe is bought with match cash. Crashing one is a withdrawal, and the squad on the bench made the deposit.

What makes practice worth it is not realism, it is the economy. Helicopters are bought with cash during a match, and here is what they cost as of Alpha 1:

Airframe Cost Role
MH-6 $6,250 Scout, the cheap way into the air
AH-6M [MINIGUNS] $7,000 Light attack
Z20 LAKOTA $7,400 Transport, unlocks at Pilot Lvl 10. The UH-1Y until Closed Beta 02 swapped the airframe
Z20 LAKOTA [MINIGUNS] $8,000 Armed transport, Pilot Lvl 25
AH-6R [ROCKETS] $12,500 Light attack with rockets
HAVOC $18,000 The gunship

Prices are the game's own list figures as of Alpha 1, from one faction's vehicle market during the Closed Alpha, and the full vehicle list carries the rest. How we record them is set out on our methodology page.

Put the money next to the input question and the argument for a stick changes shape. Nobody needs $139 of hardware to fly better. What they might want it for is the $18,000 of team cash sitting under them, and the six people who are in the aircraft because they trusted the pilot.

How steep is the learning curve after 20 years away from a stick?

Steeper than Battlefield, gentler than DCS, and closest to Arma. Kingrex, on the Steam thread: "Arma is close but they are a lot heavier feeling then in ARMA." Sizzle201 was blunter about where to put the hours: "you'd be better off practicing to fly in arma 3, feels like a mix between arma 3 and squad."

mgDuckyyy gave the honest short answer to Smith's question: "So sprint at full speed. Into a wall. Congratulations, you've just recreated the learning curve of WARDOGS flying."

The practical route is to learn the handling somewhere it is cheap to be bad. Arma 3 is the nearest analogue and it costs nothing extra if you already own it. WARDOGS charges your team every time you write off an airframe.

The other half of the curve is not flying at all, it is binding. Rebinding did not reliably work on a gamepad during the 7 August Closed Alpha, and a stick asks for far more of it than a pad does. Budget an evening for the settings screen before you budget one for the flying.

What should you sort before the Closed Beta on 21–23 August? Not a rushed order

The beta is in two days, so an order placed today is not arriving in time. That is not a reason to rush a purchase, it is a reason to use the beta as the test.

  1. If you do not own a stick, play the beta on mouse and keyboard. Map Rambosey's layout, fly the $6,250 MH-6 until you stop bouncing off things, and decide afterwards whether a stick is solving a problem you actually have.
  2. If you already own one, map it before the match, not during. The game will see the device and switch to it when you board, but it will not remember your axes, so do the five minutes of remapping on the ground rather than with a full squad in the back.
  3. If you are buying anyway, buy the Gladiator NXT EVO and check stock daily. It is the pick with the most first-hand WARDOGS use behind it, and at $139 it is the least painful thing to be wrong about.
  4. Do not pre-order the Warthog MKII for this game. It ships in September, the same month WARDOGS reaches Early Access, and nothing in its announcement suggests it was built with a shooter in mind.

The Closed Beta details are on our beta page, and if the input situation changes during the weekend, this article changes with it.

Common questions

Does WARDOGS support a flight stick or HOTAS?

Yes. Pilots who flew during the playtests bound pitch and roll to the stick, yaw to rudder pedals and a throttle to the collective axis, and the game switches to the stick automatically when you enter a helicopter and back to mouse and keyboard when you leave it. The r/WarDogs moderator megathread states plainly that HOTAS is supported. Bulkhead has not documented any of this: the Steam page still lists no controller category and three threads asking about joystick support have gone unanswered since April 2026.

Why does my flight stick lose its bindings in WARDOGS?

It is a known bug in the current build rather than anything you have set wrong. Players report having to remap every axis at the start of each session, which takes a few minutes once you know the screen. Related faults reported by individual pilots include an axis sticking at full yaw after a remap on Virpil hardware, and self-centring sticks whose physical centre does not match the game centre, which forces you to correct to the opposite side.

What flight stick do WARDOGS players use?

The VKB Gladiator NXT EVO, by a wide margin. When Gamers Heroes co-founder Blaine Smith asked for recommendations on X on 14 August 2026, nearly every reply named it, including from players who had flown WARDOGS helicopters with one. It sells for 119 to 149 US dollars depending on the grip, with the Space Combat Edition at 139 dollars.

How much is the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog MKII?

It is 599.99 US dollars, 449.99 pounds or 549.99 euros, announced on 19 August 2026 with pre-orders open and shipping in September 2026. Thrustmaster names DCS, X-Plane 11 and 12 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 as supported. It names no shooters.

Do you need a flight stick to fly helicopters in WARDOGS?

No. Mouse and keyboard flies the helicopters, and one commonly shared setup maps lift to W and S with A and D for rotation, which gives you something close to Battlefield 6 helicopter controls. A stick is a preference and a comfort purchase, not a requirement.

What helicopters are in WARDOGS?

As of Alpha 1 there are six airframes: the MH-6 scout at 6,250 dollars, the AH-6M with miniguns at 7,000, the Z20 Lakota transport at 7,400 (the UH-1Y until Closed Beta 02 replaced it), the Z20 Lakota with miniguns at 8,000, the AH-6R with rockets at 12,500 and the HAVOC gunship at 18,000. These are the in-game cash prices you pay from the vehicle market during a match.
