WARDOGS: CreateProcess — the requested operation requires elevation

Published Data as of Season 2 · 15 Oct 2026

This one is on your machine

Something is forcing the game to start elevated, and the launcher cannot start a process at a higher privilege than its own. Turning Run as administrator off is the fix, not turning it on.

What you see

The game fails to launch and names CreateProcess, with the words "The requested operation requires elevation." Running it as administrator does not help, and often makes it worse.

Fixes, in the order worth trying

Work top to bottom and stop when the game launches. Each step is labelled with how much evidence sits behind it, so you can skip the guesses if the first ones work.

  1. 01 Turn off Run as administrator on the game executable

    Reported

Find the game in your install folder, right-click it, Properties, Compatibility, and clear the "Run this program as an administrator" box.

  2. 02 Check the shortcut as well as the executable

    Reported

A shortcut carries its own elevation flag, under Properties, Shortcut, Advanced. Clearing it on the executable and leaving it set on the shortcut you actually double-click changes nothing, which is why this reads as not working for people who did half of it.

  3. 03 Launch from Steam once the flags are clear

    Reported

Steam starts the launcher, the launcher starts the anti-cheat, and the anti-cheat starts the game. Every link in that chain has to run at the same privilege level for the next one to be startable.

  4. 04 Check whether Steam itself is set to run elevated

    Unconfirmed

If Steam is elevated then everything it starts inherits that, and clearing the flags further down will not settle it. Same Properties, Compatibility box, on the Steam executable.

Did this fix it for you?

Notes from other players who hit this code. Say what worked, what did not, and which region you are in — a fix that only works in one place is worth knowing about. Best-rated first, and there is no time limit: an answer from the first beta is still an answer.

The instinct on reading the words requires elevation is to run the game as an administrator. That is the opposite of the fix, and it is why this one wastes people's evenings.

What the message is actually saying

CreateProcess is the Windows call one program uses to start another. The error is not Windows telling you that you lack permission. It is one of the game's own components reporting that it was asked to start a process at a higher privilege than the one it is running at, which Windows does not allow — a normal process cannot promote its child to administrator.

WARDOGS starts in a chain: Steam starts the launcher, the launcher starts the anti-cheat, and the anti-cheat starts the game. If a link partway down that chain is flagged to run elevated and the link above it is not, the call fails and you get this message. Adding more elevation lower down makes the mismatch worse, not better.

Where the flag usually comes from

Rarely from the player deliberately. It gets set by compatibility troubleshooters, by copying a shortcut from an older install, and by the very advice people find while trying to fix a different launch failure — "run it as admin" is the first suggestion under almost every crash thread on the internet, and it is the one that creates this one.

That is also why clearing it on the executable alone often appears not to work. The shortcut on the desktop keeps its own copy of the flag, in a different dialog, two tabs away.

How firm this is

Graded reported. The fix comes from a volunteer moderator in the official Discord and is tagged POTENTIAL FIX, with the moderator noting that the success rate is unknown and that it has worked for a few players. The thread carries no reactions and no replies at all, so there is no community signal on it in either direction.

The mechanism is sound and standard Windows behaviour rather than anything specific to this game, which is why we have written it up. Clearing an elevation flag costs nothing and is trivially reversible, so there is little to weigh against trying it.
