The fact drop: Hot Zone, factions and no battle pass
The single densest official post about WARDOGS: the Hot Zone, the three factions, the engine, squad sizes, the setting, and a flat no to battle passes.
Nine days after the reveal, Bulkhead published a long FAQ post on Steam. It remains the most information-dense official source about WARDOGS, and a lot of it still has not made it into general coverage.
The headlines:
The three factions have names. 🟦 LONESTAR, the heavy-hitters of the Western paramilitary world. 🟥 VALKYRA, who want to return the Soviet People’s Republic to greatness. 🟩 MANTICORE, the Kingdom of Persia’s shadow army out of Tehran.
The Hot Zone is real and it is official. A shifting sub-zone inside the Control Zone where players count double towards their team’s zone count and earn double cash. Bulkhead calls it match-swinging. This had been circulating as a rumour for months; it was on an official page the whole time.
Squad size is unlimited. Squadding up adds UI, communication tools and vehicle locking.
Monetisation is settled. In Bulkhead’s own words: “No Battlepass. No Pay to Win. No Nikki Minaj Skins. No Bullshit. Earn cosmetics by playing.”
The engine is custom. A framework Bulkhead calls WAR DYNAMICS, built on top of Unreal Engine 5 to handle 100-player density, with explicit attention to performance and input latency.
The setting has a name. War-torn Kolchia, fighting over PV-1, a rare resource Bulkhead describes as fuelling decades of Eurasian conflict.
Roles are player-defined, but progression is not shapeless. There are six XP tracks — Medic and Pilot among them — earned by buying and using specialist gear rather than picked from a menu before the match.
One line has aged interestingly. Asked about playtests, Bulkhead wrote: “We have a long road to Steam Early Access, so playtests aren’t in the immediate future.” The pre-alpha was announced sixteen weeks later.
